Punita learned Indian classical music, both vocal and sitar, in India from the age of 11. For over 24 years she was fortunate to continue sitar studies with the world famous Ravi Shankar, the sitar player who influenced the Beatles and particularly George Harrison in the sixties and seventies.
Punita has given concerts, recorded for radio, television and film sound tracks and appears at events and festivals. She is a teacher of music and has worked in British schools and colleges developing Indian music in the curriculum and has led groups appearing at venues across the UK including the Royal Albert Hall.
As over ninety per cent of Indian music is improvisation, Punita has been keen to explore the fusion between Indain music and Jazz and has led several highly succesful projects in this cultural Indo-Jazz crossver genre.
She is widely acknowledged as one of the leading Sitar players in the UK.
